Oahu and the Big Island, March 12th to March 25th, 2007

Blake Mathys

I visited Hawaii for research purposes, mainly to measure bird skins at the Bishop Museum. I measured ~320 individual skins over 4 days, a nice addition to my data set. I was on Oahu from Monday, March 12th until Tuesday, March 20th. I flew to the Big Island and spent the remaining time there.

March 16th: Ka'ena Point

March 18th: Kahana Valley and La'ie Point

March 19th: Trails above 'Aiea

March 20th: Moku Manu

March 21st through 23rd: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

March 23rd through 25th: Northern Big Island, Kona and north

What most amazed me were the breaching Humpback Whales. I saw whales every time I went to the shore of Oahu, and saw quite a few breaches, especially from Ka'ena Point. Very impressive.
